The Bauchi State Government, in collaboration with the Society for Family Health (SFH) through its Delivering Innovation in Self-Care (DISC) Project, commemorated the 2026 International Self-Care Day with an integrated community health outreach in Bishi Village, Bauchi Local Government Area.

The initiative provided women and other community members with essential healthcare services while promoting self-care practices as a vital component of achieving universal health coverage and improving access to quality healthcare.

The Bauchi State Maternal Child Health Coordinator, Jummai Inuwa, who was represented by Fatima Bala Abdullahi, Maternal, Child Health and Family Planning (MCH/FP) Coordinator for Bauchi LGA, said self-care has become an important component of healthcare delivery, particularly in expanding access to quality health services for women and families in underserved communities.

During the outreach, women received a range of essential health services, including family planning counselling and services, blood pressure screening, malnutrition screening, health education, and other preventive healthcare interventions aimed at promoting healthier lives and encouraging early detection of health conditions.

Speaking on the significance of the day, Mrs Abdullahi encouraged women and families to embrace healthy behaviours, seek reliable health information, and make informed decisions about their health while continuing to utilise healthcare facilities whenever professional medical attention is required.

The event formed part of activities marking this year’s International Self-Care Day, with the Society for Family Health (SFH), through the Delivering Innovation in Self-Care (DISC) Project, collaborating with the Bauchi State Ministry of Health and the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board to promote self-care across the state through integrated community outreaches, radio programmes, and community dialogues.

According to the State Programme Advisor for Service Delivery, Pharmacist Alhamdu Nufin-Allah, self-care interventions—including self-injectable contraception, HIV self-testing, pregnancy self-testing, and other preventive health practices—are helping to improve access to quality healthcare by equipping individuals with the knowledge, confidence, and tools to make informed decisions about their health.

Mr Nufi Allah, further urged residents to continue adopting positive health practices and taking advantage of available self-care interventions, noting that empowered individuals and informed communities are essential to achieving universal health coverage and building a healthy community in Bauchi State and Nigeria as whole.

He said Society for family Health will continue to commemorate International Self-Care Day alongside the rest of the world, stakeholders in such a way that communities would realize self-care are important aspects complementing health system.
