Bauchi traditional rulers commended for supporting government’s efforts at achieving universal health coverage

Traditional Rulers in Bauchi State have been commended for the support they have given to the efforts of government in providing effective and efficient access to healthcare service delivery.

The commendation was made by the Commissioner of Health and Social Welfare, Dr Sani Mohammed Dambam, at the 2025 Annual Recognition and Awards Ceremony for Best Performing Traditional Leaders (Mai Unguwas) Community Resource Groups (CRGs) and 1st BASECCOH Review meeting, held on Thursday under the Chairmanship of the Emir of Dass, Alh Usman Bilyaminu Othman.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dauda Yakubu, the Commissioner stressed the importance of the traditional institutions in the effort of the State in meeting the objectives of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through effective mobilization of the people.

He particularly commended Chairman of the Bauchi State Emirate Councils on Health, Emir of Dass, Usman Bilyaminu Othman for ensuring that his colleagues participated in the mobilization of their subjects access healthcare services at the facilities.

The Commissioner reassured that the State Government is committed to making healthcare services available to the people especially at the grassroots by collaborative partnerships in upgrading and equipping primary healthcare centers.

In his remarks, Executive Chairman of Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed explained that the award was to recognise the contribution of the traditional institutions in complementing the Board in achieving the objectives of effective and efficient service delivery.”

According to him,” But today, we look at traditional institution as a very important and vital in our activities, particularly in our case management of activities. Without the traditional rulers, we could not reach the community. So they are the backbone of our community.”

He added, “So we need all our traditional rulers to know that not only issue of health, issue of education is shouldered on the traditional ruler of that area. If any child did not go to school and you are there, you have not done anything, then you are in trouble.”

Rilwanu Mohammed added, “Then in the area of disease management, we realize that traditional rulers are supposed to report any outbreak of disease in their environment to the nearest facility or to the health authority at local government level or at the cell level.”

He concluded,” We need traditional rulers to be active in every aspect of their own community, because you are giving a divine trust by Allah which you must give account of in the hereafter.”

In his remarks on Recognition of Traditional Leaders for Healthcare Volunteerism, the Emir of Dass and Chairman of BASECCOH, Alh Usman Biliyaminu Othman explained that,”It is solely to honour and recognise those who have performed exceptionally well in various areas of volunteerism and community health support.”

According to him, “Over the years, we have observed that many of our District and Village Heads, particularly the Mai Ungwas, have worked tirelessly to provide active support towards improving the health status and wellbeing of people in their communities.”

“In this regard, I would like to assure you that nothing goes unnoticed. Your efforts have been seen and appreciated, and today, you will be recognised and honoured for your outstanding performance and contributions in the field,” he added.

According to him,”This initiative is part of a mandate that comes from the national level, implemented in partnership with the Federal Government, State Governments and traditional institutions across the country. The objective is to work together to achieve comprehensive coverage of immunisation and other essential health interventions.”

The Emir stressed, “We are expected to partner with traditional leaders and community structures to ensure that our communities actively participate in routine immunisation. We must also work together to ensure that women, particularly pregnant women, attend antenatal care and that nursing mothers receive appropriate postnatal care.”

He added,”There are many other health interventions in which traditional leaders are expected to work closely with health specialists and relevant authorities to ensure that every member of the community benefits.”

The Emir said, “In particular, children within the recommended age range for immunisation should be taken for their vaccines. Pregnant women should attend antenatal care, while expectant mothers should be encouraged and supported to deliver safely in health facilities.These are some of the important responsibilities expected of our traditional leaders.”

“Today, we acknowledge that you have performed very well in these areas, and you will be honoured in recognition of your contributions. With these few words, I once again warmly welcome you all and congratulate those being recognised today.”
