The Wife of the Governor of Niger State, Her Excellency Hajiya Fatima Mohammed Bago, has officially flagged off the 2026 First Round Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Week in Tafa Local Government Area, reaffirming the commitment of the Niger State Government to improving the health and wellbeing of mothers, newborns, and children across the state.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Hajiya Fatima Bago described maternal and child health as a cornerstone of sustainable development, emphasizing that the MNCH Week serves as a vital platform for delivering life-saving healthcare services and promoting healthy practices among families and communities.
The First Lady commended the Niger State Ministry of Health, the Niger State Primary Health Care Development Agency (NSPHCDA), and development partners for their unwavering support and contributions toward strengthening healthcare delivery and improving health outcomes across the state.
In his address, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Mohammed Bagana, applauded the First Lady for championing the campaign and acknowledged the sustained commitment of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to healthcare transformation under the New Niger Agenda.
He noted that strategic investments in maternal and child health remain critical to building a healthier, more productive, and prosperous Niger State.
The Executive Director of the NSPHCDA, Dr. Junaidu Inuwa, stated that the campaign is guided by the principles of coverage, equity, and impact, ensuring that essential healthcare services reach every eligible woman and child, particularly those in underserved and hard-to-reach communities.
He stressed that achieving lasting health outcomes requires strong community participation, government interventions and partner support.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Obed Nana, called on parents, caregivers, traditional institutions, community leaders, and other stakeholders to actively support the campaign and ensure maximum participation.
The Chairman of Tafa Local Government Honorable Danladi T Iya equally commended the state government for bringing critical healthcare interventions closer to the people.
Representatives of development partners, including UNICEF, WHO, the Sultan Foundation, Sydani Group, and other stakeholders, delivered goodwill messages highlighting the importance of sustained collaboration in reducing maternal and child mortality and expanding access to quality healthcare services throughout Niger State.
The week-long exercise will provide a range of essential healthcare interventions, including routine immunization, Vitamin A supplementation, nutrition screening, antenatal care promotion, family planning counselling, health education, and other life-saving services aimed at improving the survival, growth, and wellbeing of women and children across the state.
The Niger State Government remains committed to strengthening primary healthcare services and ensuring that no mother or child is left behind in accessing quality healthcare.
