Restoring Discipline, Professionalism  In The Niger State  Ministry Of Information  And Orientation 

The strength of any public institution lies not only in its mandate but also in its ability to uphold discipline, professionalism, and respect for constituted authority.

 These values are particularly important in the Niger State Ministry of Information and Orientation, the ministry entrusted with managing government information and projecting the image of the state.

In recent years, however, there appears to be a growing culture of resistance to official postings and redeployments of Information Officers across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The recent exercise has once again brought this issue to the forefront, with reports that some officers have sought to overturn or resist management decisions through political influence rather than established administrative procedures.

While the current situation has attracted public attention, it is important to acknowledge that this is not an isolated incident.

Similar occurrences have reportedly taken place over the years in strategic government offices such as SSG Office, Government House, Head of Service, and other key ministries.

The persistence of this trend raises legitimate concerns about institutional discipline and respect for due process.

Posting and redeployment are legitimate administrative tools designed to improve efficiency, strengthen institutions, and deploy personnel where their services are most needed.

Once such decisions are reached through the appropriate channels, they should ordinarily be respected and implemented.

If every officer relies on external influence to determine where he or she serves, the authority of management is weakened, morale among compliant officers is affected, and institutional order is compromised.

The Ministry of Information and Orientation should be a shining example of professionalism. As information managers and communication professionals, its officers are expected to promote accountability, respect for due process, and ethical conduct. These same principles must also guide our internal affairs.

Professional bodies also have a role to play. The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), as the umbrella body for journalists, should continue to encourage adherence to professional ethics, discipline, and respect for institutional processes.

Constructive engagement by the union can contribute significantly to preserving the integrity and reputation of the profession.

This is not a call to suppress legitimate grievances. Officers who feel aggrieved by administrative decisions have every right to seek redress through established channels.

However, resorting to political influence to evade postings or frustrate management decisions sets a dangerous precedent that could gradually erode the authority and effectiveness of the ministry.

The time has come for all stakeholders, the ministry’s management, the NUJ, and the Niger State Government to reinforce discipline, fairness, and respect for due process.

Administrative decisions should be implemented consistently and impartially, while genuine grievances should be handled transparently and in accordance with the rules.

Ultimately, restoring professionalism within the Ministry of Information and Orientation is a collective responsibility.

 Doing so will strengthen the institution, protect its credibility, and ensure that it continues to serve the people of Niger State with integrity and excellence.
