Contractors  deliver  556km roads, urban renewal projects in Niger

In the coming months, Niger State is expected to witness a significant transformation in its road infrastructure as contractors will deliver 556 kilometres of road projects alongside urban renewal initiatives across the state.

The delivery of the 556km road projects across the 25 Local Government Areas is expected to enhance public confidence in infrastructure development efforts.

Indication to this effect emerged on Friday, 2nd January 2026 following a Press statement issued by the Information Officer of the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructurer Development,Malam Ismaila Saba  Favu and made available to Journalists in Minna.

He said, “The large-scale construction and rehabilitation programme will cover major urban and intercity roads in Minna, Kontagora, Suleja, and Bida, executed under a fast-track arrangement to meet increasing transportation needs”.

He stated further that, “The projects are designed to improve connectivity, enhance road safety, and reduce travel time for commuters while supporting economic and social activities”.

Ismaila Saba Favu, noted that Central to the successful implementation of these projects is the Niger State Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development, which is responsible for coordination, supervision, and quality control under the watchful eyes of the Honourable Commissioner Hon. Kabir Abbas who is expected to provide strategic oversight to ensure that all projects are executed in line with approved designs and standards.

The statement further explained that, “In the same vein, under his leadership, the Ministry will enforce professionalism, discipline, and strict compliance with contractual obligations at all construction sites while the administrative framework of the Ministry, being led by the Permanent Secretary, QS Hassan Baba Etsu will strengthen and guarantee transparency, accountability, and effective resource management”.

According to Favu, the Commissioner and Permanent Secretary are expected to work collaboratively to ensure that public interest remains the priority throughout project execution, adding that,  Technical directors, engineers, quantity surveyors, and field officers of the Ministry will intensify monitoring and routine supervision and inspection to ensure quality delivery.

Further more the Information Officer of the Ministry said that the Ministry will ensure  that contractors engaged to implement approved government projects operate strictly within the terms of their contracts.

He however warned that, “Any contractor found undermining project guidelines, delaying work without justification, or compromising quality will be subjected to appropriate sanctions.,stressing that such sanctions may include financial penalties, corrective measures, or contract termination in accordance with established regulations.

These measures, explained further  are aimed at ensuring value for money and timely delivery of infrastructure projects, emphasizing that Communities in Minna, Kontagora, Suleja, and Bida are expected to benefit from improved urban mobility, reduced congestion, and better road conditions.

“The projects will also support commerce, agriculture, and industrial activities by improving access and transportation efficiency, noting that,

“Youth employment and local content participation are projected to increase through the engagement of local labour and suppliers”.

Additionally Ismaila Favu, empasized that Stakeholder engagement, including traditional institutions and community leaders, will be encouraged to promote project ownership and sustainability,saying  that, “the fast-track approach reflects the need to address long-standing road infrastructure challenges within a defined timeframe”.

“As the implementation progresses, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development is expected to remain firm and proactive in enforcing standards and timelines.

“Upon completion, the 556km road network and urban renewal projects across Niger State will contribute significantly to improved infrastructure and service delivery”, he maintained.

The statement added that, Niger State government, through the Ministry of Works and Infrastructurer Development, is expected to reaffirm that all contractors abide by regulation to endure that the quality of the project is not compromised, emphasizing that,.”this future road development programme will strengthen infrastructure delivery and enhance the overall living environment in Niger State.
