Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has flagged off the reconstruction of the 5.43-kilometre Kontagora Township Dual Carriageway, stretching from Barrack Junction to Makera Junction along Yauri Road.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Kontagora, Governor Bago described the project as a key component of his administration’s urban renewal programme and the New Niger Agenda aimed at modernising critical infrastructure across the state.
He said Kontagora remains a major commercial and agricultural hub in Niger North Senatorial District and a strategic gateway linking several communities, noting that the road project would enhance mobility, boost trade and create greater economic opportunities for residents, farmers and businesses.
According to the governor, the road has deteriorated over the years due to increased traffic, inadequate drainage facilities and ageing infrastructure, making its reconstruction necessary to improve transportation and economic activities in the area.
Bago explained that the project complements ongoing infrastructure works in Kontagora, including the 8.7-kilometre expansion of the Kontagora Bypass, which is about 85 per cent completed, and the 19.4-kilometre Kontagora Western Bypass project.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering durable infrastructure capable of attracting investment, stimulating economic growth and improving the living standards of the people.
Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, said the project would enhance road safety, improve mobility and stimulate economic development in the area.
He urged residents to support contractors to ensure timely completion of the project.
In separate remarks, the member representing Kontagora/Mariga/Wushishi/Mashegu Federal Constituency, at the National Assembly Abuja, Hon. Abdullahi Idris Garba, APC North-Central Vice Chairman, Mu’azu Bawa Rijau, Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Barr. Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, APC State Chairman, Aminu Musa Bobi, and Chairman of Kontagora Local Government Council, Barr. Lawal Yusuf, commended the governor for addressing a longstanding infrastructural challenge in the area.
They described the project as a major boost to transportation and economic activities in Kontagora and its surrounding communities.
The Lead Consultant, Engineer Aliyu Abdulrauf, said the project would include pedestrian walkways, drainage systems and other supporting infrastructure designed to enhance safety and durability.
Also speaking, the contractor, Mr. Li Xiaowen, assured the government and residents of quality service delivery and pledged to complete the project within schedule.
