It has been stressed that, matters relating to Sharia, religious freedom, federalism, resource control, and the balance of power among Nigeria’s regions are highly sensitive issues that affect the identity and aspirations of millions of citizens.
The assertion was made by Hon. Aminu Mohammed Danmaliki
(Dan Malikin Bauchi), Former Member, House of Representatives and
President, Bauchi Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (BACCIMA), in a statement he personally signed and titled: “My Position on the viral “Project True Federation” report.
According to him, “Any constitutional reform touching these areas must be based on extensive consultations, national dialogue, and broad consensus among all stakeholders.”
He further stressed that, “No
meaningful constitutional change can succeed if it is perceived as targeting the interests, beliefs, or identity of any section of the country.”
He stated that, “Like many concerned Nigerians, particularly in Northern Nigeria, I was initially disturbed by the viral report alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intends to
rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria,” abolish Sharia criminal law, and fundamentally alter the constitutional structure of the federation.”
“However, upon careful reflection, it is important that we separate facts from emotions. The Presidency has reportedly denied the existence of such a proposal, and until credible evidence is presented, Nigerians should avoid conclusions that may unnecessarily heighten regional, religious, or political tensions.,” he stressed.
He stressed that, “That said, the widespread reaction to the report reveals genuine concerns that cannot be ignored.”
Aminu Muhammad Danmaliki added that, “As a committed Nigerian, I support reforms that promote justice, equity, development, and national unity. At the same time, I believe that the constitutional rights and legitimate interests of all regions and faith communities must be respected and protected.”
He added, “I therefore urge Nigerians to remain calm, verify information before sharing it, and engage in constructive dialogue rather than inflammatory rhetoric.”
He concluded that, “Our diversity should remain a source of strength, not division. Nigeria’s future will be secured not by fear or suspicion, but by mutual respect, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles and constitutional processes.”
