The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has launched a decisive operation against illegal mining activities along Okada Road in Minna, targeting unauthorized laborers exploiting mineral resources in the Gadan Kayan Miya area.
The crackdown followed months of rising tension between residents and illegal miners, with community members repeatedly lodging complaints and submitting intelligence reports to authorities.
Residents had warned of looming environmental and safety risks as mining activities steadily encroached into residential areas.
Acting on these reports, NSCDC operatives stormed the area in a coordinated operation, bringing an end to the illicit activities.
Several suspects were arrested, while others fled into nearby bushland to evade capture. Security personnel also confiscated a large cache of mining tools used by the illegal operators.
The environmental impact of the unregulated mining had been severe, with significant soil degradation and contamination of local water sources reported in the Okada Road community. Residents said the destruction posed a serious threat to livelihoods and public health.
Following the operation, community leaders expressed relief but called for sustained enforcement to prevent a resurgence of illegal activities.
The NSCDC assured residents of continued surveillance in the area and urged the public to remain vigilant by reporting any suspicious developments.
Attention is now turning to land reclamation efforts, as stakeholders seek to address the environmental damage caused by the illegal mining activities in Gadan Kayan Miya.
