Nursing mothers in Bauchi have commended the State Government through the Primary Healthcare Development Board, for regularly embarking on vaccination and immunization if children U-5 thereby giving them right to live.
The commendation was coming as the State and donor as well as implementing partners including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), commenced the March 2026 rounds of immunization against polio and vaccination against malaria in children U-5.
Field observations across parts of Bauchi metropolis showed encouraging turnout, as many parents presented their children for vaccination and immunization.
While some took their U-5 children to health facilities where teams are waiting, others stayed at home for the House – house mobile teams for the exercise.
Some caregivers, including Zainab Isah and Maryam Abubakar, all of Bayan Vocational School, along Gombe road, expressed satisfaction with the exercise.
Speaking separately on the exercise, they attributed their participation to increased awareness, family support and the influence of community groups such as Fathers for Good Health (F4H) and Mama2Mama, which have helped to boost confidence in immunization.
Zainab Isa said that, “We really appreciate the Government for bringing the immunization to our houses, it really shows that government cares about us and our children.”
According to her, “Today, they gave me child, a new born baby, BCG injection. All my children received the full doses of immunization in order to prevent them from any child killer disease.”
She added that the malaria vaccination added to the routine immunization was a good move that will further save lives of children considering the serious effect of malaria calling on mothers to allow their children to be vaccinated and immunized.
As for Maryam Abubakar, it was her first child and was delivered at a facility by a skilled birth attendant which enabled the child to be immunized and vaccinated.
She said that, “My child is 15 months and has taken the last of the immunization, it has really helped the child to grow healthy, the teething problem did not even worried him.”
According to her, “Initially I did not want the immunization but my husband insisted that we must do it, so he brought us to the facility for it. Today, I am very happy that we allowed the child to be vaccinated and immunized.”
Maryam Abubakar then advised other nursing mothers who are yet to allow their children to be immunized and vaccinated to do allow it because according to her, the exercise is good and healthy for the children.
Sadiq Bala Abubakar is the RI Focal Person who is going round to monitor the activities of the mobile teams saying that as of the time he spoke, the situation and the exercise was seamless.
According to him, “In all the areas I went for monitoring, there was no issue of rejection, the teams are doing well and people are accepting the immunization and vaccination.”
He concluded that, “We are putting effort to educate the people that malaria vaccination has been integrated into the routine immunization at facilities. The traditional rulers and religious leaders are really assisting us in that direction.”
