Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Engnr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the party in continuation of regrouping of opposition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The former Governor of Kano State, announced his resignation on Sunday, following several nocturnal meetings and wide spread political consultations.
He however cited the need for strategic political realignment in response to the country’s evolving political landscape as the reason for his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
As contained in a statement he personally signed and issued on Sunday, the former NNPP national leader of the NNPP announced that his resignation takes immediate effect, describing the move as a difficult but necessary step.
According to him, the decision was driven by the current trajectory of national politics, which he believes requires alignment with a platform that offers a stronger opportunity to bring about meaningful change.
He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve as the party’s national leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, noting that his time in the party was both an honour and a privilege.
Musa Kwankwaso also thanked the party’s National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed; the National Working Committee; the Board of Trustees; and members across all levels for their support and commitment to the party’s ideals.
He further acknowledged the dedication of members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, stating that their collective efforts remain important in the pursuit of a better and more prosperous Nigeria.
The former Kano State Governor, however, indicated that he would align with another political platform as part of efforts to reposition for future political engagement in the country.
The statement reads, “I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect.”
It further reads: “I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the Party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections. As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.”
Furthermore, it contained, “However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time,” he added.
It also contained, “I also thank the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the party — from the ward to the state level, as well as the legacy members of the party and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication and commitment to our shared mission.”
He concluded, “We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation.”
