JEI Desilts Waterways, Plants Trees at FMC Kumo

The Jewel Environmental Initiative (JEI) has carried out a tree-planting and waterway desilting exercise at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Kumo, Gombe State, as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and improve the health of the institution’s surroundings.

The exercise involved planting trees and clearing silt and other debris that had accumulated in waterways within the medical centre.

JEI said the intervention was aimed at improving water flow, reducing water stagnation and strengthening drainage around the facility, thereby creating a cleaner and healthier environment for patients, health workers and visitors.

Speaking during the exercise, JEI’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Malam Dahiru Adamu, who represented the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer, Alhaji Samaila Bima, commended the management of FMC Kumo for its cooperation and hospitality.

He reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting the medical centre through practical environmental interventions that promote cleaner and more resilient healthcare facilities.

Adamu also commended the pioneer Medical Director of FMC Kumo, Dr Mu’azu Shu’aibu Ishaq, for his contribution to the development of the centre and appreciated the management for its continued attention to the welfare of its workforce.

He said the initiative was part of JEI’s efforts to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those relating to good health and well-being, clean water and sanitation, sustainable communities, climate action and the protection of terrestrial ecosystems.

According to him, environmental sustainability requires practical action, stressing that tree planting, proper drainage and the restoration of waterways were important measures for building healthier institutions and communities.

He added that JEI would continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to promote environmental protection and climate resilience across Gombe State.

The organisation urged institutions and communities to embrace environmental conservation initiatives, noting that maintaining clean surroundings and functional waterways could help prevent flooding, improve public health and protect the environment.
