Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has received with deep sadness the news of the demise of Professor Buba Garegy Bajoga, a renowned academic, accomplished engineer and elder statesman, who died at the age of 88 in the United Kingdom.
The Governor described the late Professor Bajoga as an academic of international repute, a disciplined educator and an illustrious son of Gombe State who devoted his life to scholarship, public service and national development.
Inuwa Yahaya recalled the distinguished service of the deceased to Gombe State, particularly his role as Chairman of the Committee on Tertiary Institutions in 2020.
He noted that the committee’s report provided direction and added momentum to the ongoing repositioning of tertiary education in the state under the present administration.
“Professor Bajoga was a man of exceptional intellect, integrity and uncommon commitment to national service. His counsel, experience and patriotism greatly strengthened our efforts to reform and reposition tertiary education in Gombe State,” Inuwa Yahaya said.
The Governor noted that Professor Bajoga would be remembered for his humility, discipline and commitment to education, engineering and the development of Nigeria.
He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the academic community and all those who were touched by his remarkable life and service.
He also stated that, “We pray that Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgives his shortcomings and rewards his good deeds with with Aljannatul Firdaus,”
Professor Bajoga was a highly accomplished engineer and educator whose academic career spanned several decades.
He rose through the ranks at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, before attaining the rank of Professor of Electrical Engineering in 1984.
He later played a pivotal role in the evolution of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, where his contributions were instrumental to the institution’s attainment of autonomous status.
He served two terms as Vice-Chancellor of ATBU between 1984 and 1994 and also chaired the Committee of Vice-Chancellors.
Beyond academia, Professor Bajoga made far-reaching contributions to Nigeria’s telecommunications and engineering sectors. He held several influential national appointments, including Director and Managing Director positions at the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), and served in various capacities with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), helping to shape policy, regulation and institutional governance in the sector, as contained in a statement signed by Ismaila Uba Misilli, Director-General, (Press Affairs), Government House, Gombe.
