National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), North-East Zonal Center, has warned members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), North-East subregion, against the use of illicit small arms and light weapons during the forthcoming NANS Zonal convention and elections.
The warning was given by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), North-East Zonal Centre, under the Office of the National Security Adviser to President Bola Tinubu.
North-East Zonal Director of NCCSALW, Maj-:Gen Abubakar Adamu (Rtd), was speaking in Maiduguri on Thursday, when the North-East Zonal NANS delegation led by Comrade Sulaiman Sarki, the NANS Chairman in the subregion paid him a courtesy visit.
According to him, the Centre has been mandated by the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute any individual involved in the proliferation of illicit weapons in the country, adding that the centre has been seeking for more support and collaboration from all stakeholders in the North East.
He stressed that, “Collaboration with all the stakeholders will go a long way in curtailing the menace of the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons in the country, thereby reducing the level of terrorism and banditry.”
“We appreciate your visit and we will do everything possible to support and work in collaboration with you to ensure a society free of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons,” he further said.
The Zonal Director who urged the NANS leadership not to engage themselves in using arms during and after elections, also advised them to continue to maintain peaceful coexistence with one another and be good ambassadors and leaders of tomorrow.
He also assured them that during the convention, the North-East Zonal Centre would be there to deliver a lecture on the dangers of the proliferation of illicit arms and light weapons, ensure free and fair elections and also see how to support them in their endeavors.
Earlier, the NANS Zonal Coordinator, solicited for the support of NCCSALW during the Zonal convention and elections slated for the end of January, 2026.
He promised not to let anyone get involved in using small arms and promised to report anything related to the use of small arms and light weapons.
The delegation then commended the Zonal Director for his commitments to peace in all his career and made him a permanent member of the Association.
