In a decisive move to combat illegal mining activities in Niger State, the Hon. Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mohammed Qasim Danjuma, has led an enforcement operation targeted at illegal miners operating within a residential area in Minna at about 6:30pm.
The operation reportedly took place behind the Bilkebeb Shango area of Minna, where illegal mining activities were said to have been ongoing.
The Commissioner was accompanied by the Ministry’s Director of Administration, AGM Zuma, alongside Operstives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), including their Operational Commander (OC).
During the operation, seven suspects were arrested at the illegal mining site, while nine motorcycles believed to have been used for the unlawful activities were also confiscated.
The arrested persons and the confiscated motorcycles were subsequently handed over to the State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(SCDC) for further investigation and necessary action.
Speaking during the operation, the Hon. Commissioner expressed deep concern and disappointment that illegal mining activities were being carried out within a residential areas, describing the development as dangerous to both human lives and the environment.
He explained that the enforcement action forms part of the New Niger Agenda of the State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, aimed at sanitising the mining sector and eradicating illegal mining across the state.
The Commissioner however warned that anyone found engaging in illegal mining activities at the site or any other unauthorised location would face the full weight of the law.
According to him, the state government remains committed to transforming the mining sector, boosting internally generated revenue, and protecting the natural resources of Niger State for the benefit of present and future generations.
He further noted that it is the responsibility of government to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens by preventing activities capable of endangering lives and properties.
The Niger State Ministry of Mineral Resources has continued to intensify monitoring and enforcement operations across mining communities as part of efforts to restore order, strengthen regulation, and promote responsible mining practices within the state.
