Niger State has officially commenced the implementation of the Federal Government’s Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) programme, following its selection as one of 10(ten) beneficiary states across the country.
The Secretary to the Niger State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, presided over the inaugural SAPZ implementation meeting at his office in Minna, signaling a pivotal move in the State’s agenda for agro-industrialization, economic diversification, and job creation.
The high-level meeting convened key government officials and critical stakeholders to deliberate on strategic coordination, institutional readiness, and the alignment of the SAPZ initiative with the agricultural and economic development blueprint of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
Niger State was selected by the National Coordination Office in Abuja to participate in Phase Two of the programme. This positions the State to benefit from enhanced agricultural value chains, expanded market access, increased private sector investment, and strengthened agro-industrial supply networks.
Speaking at the meeting, Alhaji Abubakar Usman underscored the importance of robust inter-ministerial collaboration to ensure the programme’s success.
He described the SAPZ initiative as “a unique opportunity for the State to harness its vast agricultural potential, attract sustainable investments and improve the livelihoods of farmers and rural communities,” adding that the programme aligns with Governor Bago’s vision of “using agriculture as a catalyst for industrialization, wealth creation and inclusive economic growth.”
In a related development, the SSG also held consultative talks with representatives of the Diko Community Development Association from Gurara Local Government Area of the State.
The engagement reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to inclusive and participatory governance.
The meeting provided a platform for community leaders to articulate their development priorities and explore sustainable partnerships with the State Government.
Alhaji Abubakar Usman emphasized that grassroots involvement is essential to effective policy implementation, noting that “sustainable development is best achieved when communities are actively involved in government initiatives.”
These engagements underscore the strategic role of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) min policy coordination, stakeholder engagement, and the realization of the New Niger Agenda.
With its abundant arable land, rich agricultural resources, and strategic location, Niger State’s participation in the SAPZ programme is expected to catalyze private sector investment, create employment opportunities, and bolster food security within the State and beyond.
