Not fewer than Twenty-six corpses have been discovered aftermath of the deadly attack on residents of Anguwan Rukuba in Jos by yet to be identified gunmen suspected to be bandits.
The incident occurred at about 7:26 p.m on Sunday, 29th March 2026, along the road linking the area to Eto Baba junction.
The attack heightened fears among residents, especially in the wake of earlier threats reportedly issued by criminal elements to launch attacks on certain communities in the state.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the assailants stormed the community unexpectedly and began shooting sporadically.The gunfire caused panic as residents scrambled for safety.
The sudden outbreak of violence disrupted normal activities in the area as many people fled to their homes while nearby businesses shut down abruptly.
However, security personnel have since been deployed to the scene and surrounding areas to restore calm and prevent further escalation of the situation.
Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor, Barr Caleb Mutfwang, on Monday, visited the scene of the attack at Gari Ya Waye in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly killed several residents Sunday evening.
The Governor, who was visibly shaken upon seeing the corpses of victims, condemned the attack in the strongest terms and vowed to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The incident, which occurred at about 7:45 p.m., involved yet-to-be-identified gunmen who stormed the community and sporadically opened fire on residents going about their normal activities.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the attackers, numbering about seven, were allegedly dropped off by a trailer which immediately sped away.
The Governor enjoined residents to remain law-abiding and cautioned against taking the law into their own hands through reprisals.
He described the attack as “barbaric,” noting that the state government was working round the clock with security agencies to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of citizens.
During the visit, the Governor was accompanied by the State Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, and other top security chiefs.
He declared that the mayhem unleashed on law-abiding citizens was unacceptable and would not be condoned under any circumstances.
According to him, security agencies had been mobilised and were on top of the situation, working towards restoring law and order in the affected area and beyond.
While calling for calm among citizens irrespective of faith, he urged them to provide credible information that would assist security agencies in tracking down those responsible.
Comrade Samson Chiroma, a youth activist who narrated the ordeal to the Governor, disclosed that the assailants carried out the attack in a commando-style operation, wearing partial camouflage and veils around their necks, and opened fire on anyone in sight.
He alleged that the military provided cover for the attackers, claiming that while residents pursued the perpetrators towards the riverside, military personnel stopped them from continuing the pursuit.
According to him, 26 corpses had been recorded, while several others were battling for their lives in various hospitals.
The Angwan Rukuba–Tina Junction axis remained tensed, with elderly residents mourning the loss of their children, relatives and loved ones.
Despite the presence of security personnel, youths in the area were observed to be on alert, ready to respond to any further emergency.
Among those reportedly killed was Ngo Chundung Isa, who was selling a local delicacy, kwadon wake (beans), at the time of the attack.
Her body, along with others, was deposited at the Angwan Rukuba Police Station, where grieving residents gathered and called for justice.
Yop Kyatta, Special Adviser to the Jos North Local Government Chairman and a resident of Angwan Rukuba, said the atmosphere in the community was one of pain, anger and grief.
She disclosed that Governor Caleb Mutfwang had visited the community to commiserate with residents and assured them that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
Governor Mutfwang also visited victims receiving treatment at the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
He wished the injured a speedy recovery and assured them of government support.
The Chief Medical Director of JUTH, Dr Pokop Bupwatda, who conducted the governor round the facility, informed him that medical personnel were attending to the victims and providing all necessary care as the Governor commended the hospital for its diligent service to humanity.
