Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has appealed to the Federal Government to give increased attention to federal roads across Niger State in order to ease the movement of people and goods.
The Governor made the appeal during a visit to the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, at his office in Abuja.
Governor Bago noted that Niger State has one of the highest numbers of federal roads in the country and serves as a major gateway between the northern and southern parts of Nigeria.
He stressed that the strategic importance of the state makes it imperative for the roads to be kept in good and motorable condition for commuters and economic activities.
Expressing concern over the persistent gridlock along the Jebba–Lambata axis caused by poor road conditions, the Governor described movement on the route as extremely difficult for residents and travellers.
While appreciating the Federal Government’s efforts in rehabilitating some roads, he called for expedited completion of ongoing projects and urged proactive intervention on the Jebba and Izom–Lambata bridges to avert possible disasters.
In his response, Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, said progress has been made on the Minna–Suleja road project, adding that contractors are already working on the Jebba and Lambata bridges.
He commended Governor Bago for his commitment to development, particularly in urban renewal, agriculture, health, and education, and praised the state government’s intervention works on federal roads.
The Minister also assured that the ministry would review the status of all federal roads in Niger State with a view to taking appropriate action.
