Properties worth one hundred million naira have been destroyed by flood at the Imani community of the Minna South and several houses and valuable property in M.I.Wushishi community in Minna, the Niger State capital.
The incident which occured in the early hours of Saturday as a result of heavy downpour, had displaced several family members.
Former Chairman of NUJ Niger state Council, Comrade Abdullahi Idris and a Community leader in the area, stated this in a statement issued to Newsmen in Minna the state capital, describing the incident as devastating.
Comrade Abdul Idris however explained that many houses have been submerged, while vehicles, electrical appliances and fences have also been destroyed by the unfortunate incident.
At M.I. Wushishi, the flood swept through parts of the community, carrying debris and other materials damaging several houses, mosques, islamic school and vehicles parked within the community.
The residents identified the lack of adequate drainage systems as one of the major challenges facing the community, saying it contributes significantly to the flooding and the destruction of properties.
They also raised concerns about a dam reportedly constructed in the area by a man identified as Captain Taylor at a time when flooding was not as severe as it is today.(on Sunday).
They appealed to the state government, humanitarian organisations, philanthropists and other stakeholders to urgently intervene and address the situation, in order to protect the lives and property of residents.
