The Secretary to the Niger State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, has described the annual Eid-el-Kabir Durbar (Hawan Bariki) as a treasured cultural institution that promotes unity, preserves the rich heritage of the Nupe Kingdom, and strengthens peaceful coexistence among the people.
Alhaji Abubakar Usman stated this while delivering his welcome address at the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir Durbar held in Bida, the ancient seat of the Nupe Kingdom.
The SSG noted that the Durbar remains one of the most significant cultural events in Niger State, serving as a symbol of the people’s history, traditions, and enduring values.
He emphasized that the event continues to attract widespread participation and admiration, showcasing the rich cultural identity of the Nupe people to the world.
He commended the Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, CFR, for hosting the event and for his unwavering commitment to the preservation and promotion of the cultural heritage of the Nupe Kingdom.
Alhaji Abubakar Usman further lauded the traditional institution for its support towards maintaining peace, stability, and development in Niger State.
The SSG observed that such cultural displays not only preserve the customs and traditions of the people but also contribute significantly to promoting tourism, fostering unity, and strengthening communal bonds.
He reiterated the commitment of the administration of Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to supporting cultural festivals and traditional institutions as vital partners in advancing social harmony and sustainable development across the state.
Alhaji Abubakar Usman called on the people of Niger State to continue to uphold the virtues of peace, tolerance, sacrifice, and mutual respect which the Eid-el-Kabir celebration represents, while praying for continued progress and prosperity for the state and the nation.
The colourful Durbar featured spectacular horse-riding displays by district and village heads, royal title holders, and skilled horsemen who paid homage to the Etsu Nupe in a grand procession that reflected the rich cultural traditions of the kingdom.
The event also witnessed the symbolic presentation of kolanuts by His Royal Highness to the Farmer Governor, a revered tradition that signifies respect, loyalty, and goodwill among the people.
