The Niger State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), in collaboration with the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, has organised a one-day capacity-building workshop to enhance the skills and professionalism of Sports Journalists across the state
Facilitating the session, Mr. Dan Amasingha delivered in-depth training on the fundamentals of sports reporting, stressing accuracy, balance, and professionalism.
He guided participants through practical techniques for writing comprehensive match reports, verifying information, and adhering to ethical standards, including impartiality, respect for athletes and officials, and the avoidance of misinformation.
The workshop also examined emerging trends in sports journalism, particularly the growing influence of digital media.
Participants were introduced to effective use of social media platforms, live reporting, photography, and short-form video content to better engage modern audiences, especially younger sports enthusiasts.
Speaking at the event, the State Chairman of SWAN, Comrade Alhassan Kutigi, expressed satisfaction with the success of the training, describing it as part of ongoing efforts to reposition sports journalism in Niger State.
He assured members of the association’s commitment to organising more capacity-building programmes in the future.
Kutigi acknowledged the support of key stakeholders, including Mr. Dan Amasingha, immediate past SWAN Chairman, Mr. George Daniya, former national officer, and Comrade Abubakar Hassan, noting that their contributions have continued to strengthen the association.
In his closing remarks, the SWAN leadership revealed plans to sustain the initiative through additional workshops focusing on sports photography, commentary, and data-driven reporting.
The goal, according to the association, is to equip journalists in the state with the competence required to compete at the national level.
The initiative aligns with similar efforts by SWAN chapters in Kwara, Kano, Ogun, Rivers, and Lagos, as the national body intensifies its campaign to improve standards in sports journalism across Nigeria.
Participants, drawn from radio, television, print, and online media platforms, described the workshop as impactful. It provided a platform for both experienced and emerging journalists to exchange ideas, share experiences, and address practical challenges in the profession.
The event attracted notable stakeholders, including the North Central Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Badminton Association, Alhaji Mohammed Nma Kolo, represented by Alhaji Nma Makun; the Chairman of the Niger State Sports Commission, Hon. Danjuma Masu, represented by Alhaji Baba Sheshi Katcha; and the Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, Mr. Uriah Gana.
Stakeholders at the workshop emphasised the importance of quality sports journalism in driving sports development.
They noted that accurate and engaging reporting can boost fan interest, promote local clubs such as Niger Tornadoes, enhance athletes’ visibility, and help curb misinformation while fostering positive social change.
