Agwara Local Government Area was again thrown into fear and confusion in the early hours of Sunday,1st February 2026, following a violent invasion by suspected armed bandits.
The attackers reportedly began their assault in the main town of Agwara, Headquarters nof Agwara LGA of Niger State by allegedly setting ablaze a police station, leaving the security post badly damaged.
According to eyewitnesses account who spoke with our reporter on the condition of annonimity,said afterward, the bandits moved to the residence of one Mr. Ahmed Burade, where they were said to have abducted his wife, his sister-in-law, and three of his children.
According to eyewitness accounts, Mr. Ahmed Burade narrowly escaped while being taken by the bandits when police operatives attempted to repel the attackers.
It was further learnt that his escape, however, did not prevent the kidnappers from fleeing with the other victims.
The suspectedĀ bandits wereĀ also said to haveĀ attacked the UMCA Church, which they reportedly set part of it on fire, further deepening the devastation and shock across the community.
As a result of the attacks, many residents of Agwara fled their homes for dear livesĀ and sought refuge in nearby bushes and surrounding areas for fear of further violence.
Furthermore the situation remains tense, with the community gripped by anxiety and uncertainty.
Residents are now calling on security agencies and relevant authorities to urgently intervene, restore calm, and ensure the safe rescue of those abducted
Meanwhile, the Niger State Police Command has Confirmed the Armed bandits attack on Agwara Local Government Council HeadquartersĀ of Niger State at about 3:40 am on Sunday 1st February, 2026;at at about 3.40am.
Confirming the incident, the Spokesman of the State Police Command SP Wasiu AbiodunĀ stated this in a Press statement issued and made available to Journalists on Sunday in Minna
The statement stated further that the suspected terrorists group were said to haveĀ Ā invaded the community, attacked the Police station where they were said to have beenĀ engaged by the tactical team on ground.
SP Abiodun said, “the armed banditsĀ used suspected dynamite to set the station ablaze, having overpowered the team”.
The statement stated further that the suspectedĀ terrorists group later moved to UMC church in the community, burnt part of the church, proceeded to other areas and abducted about five persons whose identity is yet to be ascertained.
SP Abiodun however assured that “Monitoring of the situation continues,stressing that further development will be communicated to the members of the public very soon.
